Vancouver ProCounsel is an alliance of professionals who work with clients intending a permanent move to Vancouver. You and your immigration lawyer or consultant may have already successfully completed the first step - your immigration application. But what’s next and how do you prepare?
Thesenext steps are different for all of our clients. Some clients need information on buying a house while others need advice on tax. One thing is certain; it’s easier and often essential to start addressing these issues before stepping off the plane at Vancouver International Airport.
Some of the more common requests that we help our clients with are house purchases, mortgages, financial planning, tax advice, auto/home insurance, medical coverage and foreign currency transactions. These everyday services are simple for most Canadians however, it can become more complicated for someone who has just arrived
Something as simple as insuring a vehicle can cost hundreds of dollars extra if you can’t produce a clean driving record from your country of origin. You may need to wait for several days or weeks for a suitable copy of your driving record to be forwarded to your insurance broker. The easiest way to avoid unnecessary cost and delays is to contact our insurance broker before you arrive.
Finding professionals who are familiar with the specific issues relating to immigrants can be difficult for someone living abroad. Vancouver ProCounsel has assembled a team of professionals to address the specific needs of clients moving to Canada.
We complete an initial assessment with our clients to identify their specific issues, which will need to be addressed before the actual move, and refer them to the appropriate professionals. This saves our clients time and money. It also cuts down on the stress and frustration that can arise from dealing with someone who is not experienced with the specific issues of immigrants.
It’s quite common for our clients to give us a list of the issues that they would like to address. After discussing their plans, we usually uncover other issues that may have been missed. A primary example relates to our government sponsored medical services plan (MSP) in Canada. It’s common for people to assume that MSP will pay for all medical expenses if they get sick or have an accident. Not so. MSP requires three months of residence in Canada before coverage begins. This can be a very costly mistake if a family member needs medical attention in those first three months.
