Things To Do In Vancouver This Week: Nov 6.-12, 2008

Many of us are still finishing off leftover Halloween candy, and hoping to get back on track with a healthier lifestyle (just in time for those diet-busting holiday parties). Here are some things to do in and around Vancouver this week, including a list of Remembrance Day ceremonies in and around Vancouver.

Thursday, November 6 Rock Band: Battle Of The Bands

See seven teams compete in an air-guitar fundraiser at the Roxy (932 Granville), with proceeds going to the Make-a-Wish Foundations of B.C. and the Yukon. Tickets are $20 advance, or $25 at the door. Events start at 8 p.m. Find more info at www.rockbandvancouver.com.

 

Friday, November 7– Last Candidate Standing

It's an evening of intelligent entertainment, as party representatives and independents from the municipal election, media experts, local musicians, and artists come together for an night of politics and theatre. Saturday, November 8– Ballet BC's The Faerie Queen

Tonight is the last evening to enjoy The Faerie Queen, a magical recreation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ballet BC puts on the show at 8 p.m. at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, or there's a tea matinee at 2 p.m. Ticket prices start at $35.73 at www.balletbc.com or 604-732-5003, ext. 207.

Sunday, November 9 – Best Of The West Antique Expo
This annual antiques and collectibles event brings together 75 dealers, antique identification clinics, and appraiser Peter Blundell. Come see how much that old painting in your attic is worth, or check out some beautiful antique furniture, china, collectibles and more at the Tradex Trade & Exhibition Centre (1190 Cornell St). Monday, November 10 - Gwar,

Thrash-metal band Gwar is at the Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville) tonight with guests Kingdom of Sorrow and Toxic Holocaust. Gwar-goers can expect the usual gory costumes, political satire and random dousings with fake fluids from the band. Tuesday, November 11– Remembrance Day

Remember those who gave their lives in times of war, and commemorate the end of World War I on this date in 1918. If you're a veteran, you will ride free on all transit bus and SkyTrain services, as well as Community Shuttle and HandyDART. The following Remembrance Day events take place in Vancouver:


Eight-plane formation

Weather permitting, eight planes manned by the Fraser Blues formation flying team will be over cenotaphs around the Lower Mainland. Look to the skies for them in Chilliwack at 10:40 a.m.; Aldergrove at 10:54 a.m.; Fort Langley at 11 a.m.; Langley at 11:06 a.m.; Port Kells at 11:11 a.m.; and Cloverdale at 11:16 a.m.


New Westminster ceremony, 10 a.m.

B.C. Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo presents the memorial address at New Westminster's Remembrance Day ceremony. The event takes place at the Royal Westminster Regiment Armouries at 530 Queens Avenue (overflow seating at the Queens Avenue United Church). After the ceremony there will be a parade to the cenotaph in front of City Hall for a wreath-laying followed by two minutes of silence.

Surrey Cenotaph, 10 a.m.

The new Surrey First World War Cenotaph statue will be unveiled, performed by government representatives, veterans and students. The ceremony starts at the Surrey Learning & Discovery Centre , 17710 – 56A Avenue.

Orpheum Theatre, 1:45 p.m.
A number of musicians, including Dal Richards and Shari Ulrich, will perform at a Remembrance Day concert at the Orpheum Theatre. The Vancouver Bach Youth Choir, Vancouver Naval Veterans Band and the Band of the 15th Field Artillery will also take the stage. The will provide pre-show entertainment, starting at 1:45 p.m., with the concert beginning at 2:30 p.m.


Delta ceremonies, 11 a.m
Delta has two ceremonies: one at the cenotaph in Memorial Park at 47th Ave. and Garry Street in Ladner (just before 11 a.m.) and another at the North Delta Social Heart Plaza at 11415 84th Avenue at (3 p.m.).

Richmond remembers, 10:40 a.m.
Richmond will have a Remembrance Day ceremony at the City Hall Cenotaph (6911 No. 3 Road), a Remembrance Day parade and a colour party with the Royal Canadian Legion veterans, and cadets.


Port Moody ceremony, 10 a.m., guns at 11 a.m.

The Remembrance Day ceremony takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion in Port Moody, as the re-enactment group The Seymour Artillery Company fires the "Minute Guns" funeral salute from muzzle-loading cannons.


City of Vancouver, 10:30 a.m.

The City of Vancouver will hold its Remembrance Day ceremony at the Victory Square Cenotaph on West Hastings Street (between Cambie and Hamilton streets). At 10:10 a.m., the Vancouver Bach Youth Choir will perform, followed by a parade of veterans, former service personnel, and members of the Canadian Forces. Weather permitting, there will be a fly-past by an Aurora aircraft and small planes from the Recreational Aircraft Association and Western Warbirds.

 

Wednesday, November 12 – Must Love Dogs

The B.C. SPCA's presents a cocktail mixer for local singles and their pets with wine, appetizers, speed dating, a pet fashion show, and a silent auction. All proceeds benefit abused and neglected animals; tickets are $100, the event takes place at the Coast Plaza Hotel (1763 Comox). Get more information at www.mustlovedogs.ca/
