Trevor LindenWhat can you say about Trevor Linden? He quietly ended his playing career with the end of last season, and we have barely heard from him since, but he continues to discretely go about doing what he does. Helping out with various charities, foundations etc. The Canucks 2nd all time leading scorer has always been known as much or more for his class off the ice, as he was known for his heart on the ice.
Here is a story that most people have not heard. And to those who know anything about the former Vancouver captain, it should come as no surprise.
On October 9, 2008, Trevor Linden, accompanied by his brother, was present at GM Place for the Canucks 2008-2009 home opener. He sat in a second level press box, away from any attention. He was there for much more than just the season opener of his former team, who he had at one point led to being within a game of the 1994 Stanley Cup. October 9 was a night to honour a former teammate, Luc Bourdon, who was killed in a motorcycle accident last May.
Trevor was there that night for his teammate, the same way he was there for his teammates everyday during his 19-year NHL career. It was the only time so far this season that Linden has been seen around the rink.
This evening, he will once again return to GM Place, when the Vancouver Canucks will host the Edmonton Oilers at the garage. It will be a very special night, as the Canucks are going to retire Trevor Linden’s #16. It is a very special night, as the entire city of Vancouver will honour #16, for the 16 years he has devoted to the city, the team and the fans.
Thanks for the memories Trevor…
