As the name implies, this area is really two neighbourhoods.
Dunbar runs North-South from 16th Ave to Southwest Marine Drive, and East-West from Mackenzie Street to the edge of the UBC Endowment Lands and Pacific Spirit Park. At the centre of this affluent neighbourhood, which boasts tree-lined streets and many single family homes, Dunbar Street itself has a great feeling of community, with small, varied shops stretching for blocks. There are also many parks in the area, largest being Memorial Park West on Dunbar between 31st and 33rd avenues. The area is famous for many things, most notably, international environmental activist group Greenpeace began in a home on West 19 th. Dunbar is also home to the 2,000 year old Camosun Bog – there is an entrance to the Bog boardwalks at Camosun and 19th ave.
Southlands refers to the area south of Southwest Marine Drive, with the basically same East-West boundaries as Dunbar. Mainly rural, as the area fall on the Fraser River floodplains, Southlands is most known as a great area for horseback riding. There are several horseback riding operations in the area, open year round. There is also a golf course, extravagant mansions and the Musqueam Native Reserve. The shores of Southlands are also a great place to watch the mighty Fraser River flow into the sea.
